MPC Paris teams up with Fleur & Manu and Ogilvy Paris on an effervescent adventure for Perrier. The spot features hot air balloons in a wild race through the sky.
The Concept

The team was inspired by Wacky Races, iconic snippets from the historical bank of Perrier adverts and concept imagery from directors Fleur & Manu.

Stills of a natural well in Yucatan were used as a base for the opening scenes.
Concept sketches of the balloons came from directors Fleur & Manu. The team started to build the balloons based on these images.
The Production

3D Supervisor Fabian Frank led the team to create 50 variations of CG hot air balloons, and re-build the baskets in 3D.

The shoot took place in Argentina which allowed for natural lighting as a reference for the VFX team. Actors and extras were suspended close to the ground in their baskets.
The lion, marmoset and parrots were shot-in camera at an Argentinian zoo with multiple tasks required to get the correct action.
Each balloon has its own unique brand of eccentricity. To distinguish the individualities, Fabian's team used various cloth simulations and made some balloons shinier, thicker or added a deeper sheen.
Each balloon was given a unique style and quality of fabrics based on the people inside.
References from the internet were used to understand the way hot air balloons move and how the cloth behaves.
For the first shot in the cave, the team went to a real cave in Mexico for a reference shoot. A helicopter and 360-degree camera was used to create back plates and to use as a base of matte painting and the 3d cave.
The VFX team took the live shots and integrated the protagonists with CG elements and shot/DMP backgrounds.
Colorist Matthieu Toullet worked on the vibrant grade, using eye-popping colors to create the bright and warm look.
Making of Perrier, Hot Air Balloon

The final spot is a riot of color, multiple locations and many minute details in every shot culminating together in an ambitious final result for the iconic French brand, Perrier.
