Tippett Studio was thrilled to collaborate with Director Peter Farrelly and Doner Company to create a series of 5 “Dodge Law” spots for Dodge. Together, the pair enforce 'Dodge Law', busting Dodge drivers for activities unbefitting a Dodge driver (such as eating a fancy pastry while driving a Dodge.)
The Concept

The Dodge Law Monkey was envisioned as a CG counterpart to Richard Rawling's character for a series of commercials for the new line of Dodge cars and SUVs.

The 2D concept art was created by art director Mark Dubeau.
The 2D concept art was then 3D modeled in Maya and Zbrush by modeler Jack Kim.
The Production

The fur groom was done by CG Supervisor Aharon Bourland using Houdini as well as Tippett's proprietary fur software, Furator. Phil Tippett himself created a stuffy to match the key art. The stuffy was used on-set by lead animator Will Groebe and VFX Supervisor Chris Morley. For lighting, the team used Katana for setup, and rendered with the new Renderman/RIS rendered.

Tippett Studio designed the monkey to look like a puppet, with matted fur and irregular patches.
On set, a stuffed version, built by Phil Tippett, stood in for the CG animation with Richard Drawlings acted opposite him.
Animation was done in Maya and final comping was done in Nuke.

The biggest challenge on the show were the tight deadlines - 53 shots from the shoot and a 7 week fast-paced postproduction schedule. Tippett delivered eight 30-second spots.
