Territory was brought on board Marvel’s latest blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron to add a fresh ‘real world’ aesthetic to all on-set screen graphics. Territory’s work began in the pre production stages when Joss Whedon’s script was still in development.
The Concept

David Sheldon-Hicks shaped the narrative plot points that were best illustrated with UI. He began by creating unique visual brands for each character’s technology, giving each one a distinct color palette, style and content references that reflected their personality, interests and role within the film narrative.

The research at this stage was all about combining real world references with Marvel’s highly stylized future-tech aesthetic, and they explored everything from state of the art architecture, engineering innovations and military technology to cellular, plant and human biology and advances in clinical and reconstructive biotechnology.
Stark early concept.
The distinct color palettes created the unique visual brands as you can see in this image for new character Dr Cho who was given a purple & pink colorway that included advanced clinical biotechnology references. Hulk was green with a lot of biology references and Tony Stark/ Iron Man was red, orange & gold with content that reflected his passion for engineering.
The Production

Territory’s task was to create screens that helped tell a more rounded story of each character such as what they worked on when not fighting bad guys or what fascinated them.

Territory used Cinema4D, After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator to craft the screens and animation, and explored new ways to create 3D holographic images.
For each Avengers hero, the number of screens and density of detail is there deliberately to reflect their brilliance, energy and drive to solve problems, experiment and innovate.
In other areas, the screens tell a story about the technology at their disposal – advanced avionics, military applications and strategy. Also, in the case of the Fortress’ Leviathan screens, alien technology is merged with human UI.
The screens were also intended to show how essential Jarvis is to Stark’s and the Avengers world.
Iron Man schematics are all based on real models from ILM, and show the detail in how they are assembled and tested after missions.

The biggest Marvel production to date at Shepperton Studios, Territory delivered over 200 screens and 80 minutes of unique animations across 11 sets, including Avengers Tower, Stark’s, Banner and Cho’s labs, the Fortress, and the Quinjet.

On-set screens seen in Stark’s Lab
Banner’s Lab screens reflect his interest in plant and cellular biology.
Dr Cho’s screens convey advanced biotechnology.
