Zoic Studios worked with Leo Burnett Chicago to create a dramatic Chimera utilizing the real-time rendering power of the Unreal 4 game engine combined with data captured from XSens motion suit.
The Concept

For the 2014 Cannes Lions Festival , Zoic Studios was asked to create never before seen experiential visuals for the festival’s official opening and closing galas. Since the event themes of fire and ice were chosen, a fire and ice inspired design deck was created to identify the direction of the final characters that would use game engine technology to perform live on large projection screens.

The Production

To make the characters move, Zoic collaborated with XSens, utilizing their motion capture suit. The final components of the experience were brought together by Zoic's games and technology group in the latest Epic Unreal Engine. The team developed unique software components and configuring a computer capable of rendering all the detail in a full HD resolution at more than 30 frames per second.

Unreal Engine 4 was used for creating the mythical creature.

Custom software developed by Zoic enabled the live connection between a dancer wearing an XSens motion capture suit and the digital creature, animating the lioness creature in real-time reaction to the dancer's moves. Special moves and controls were built that allowed the dancer to trigger events like particle explosions and flamethrower-like effects as she danced to the music of stars like Ne-Yo.
