Time Based Arts created this post-apocalyptic spot for Audi. The 65-second TV spot follows an A5 Coupe driving through a town when its service light come. This alerts an angry troupe of zombie mechanics that chase down the A5 until it escapes capture through the doors of a huge, futuristic Audi service center.

The Concept

Director Sebastian Strasser wanted to create something on an epic scale. The team spent a month in the preparation annd planning of the shoot to confirm that they would be able to deliver their no holds barred approach.

Time Based Arts brougth Sylvie Minois on board to do the concept design for Audi's "garage of the future". Minois started the concept art with a wide architectural explorations and transitioned over time into looking cloesly at the current existing Audi garages.

The Production

The spot was shot in the Mojave desert outside LA over a 4-day period. There were over 80 extras on set plus 12 trained stuntmen. Time Based Arts tested themselves with some big vfx setups, primarily the fully interactive crowd simulations in cgi.

Live Action Shoot - Shot from a moving camera rig, they pulled the stuntmen on a rubber mat at 20mph. This allowed for a controlled performance by the stuntmen using a springboard and crash mat.

CG Crowd Animation - One of the largest challenges was populating each shot with CGI characters not only behind the love action shots, but amongst the actors as well.

Adding Action Shot Plates - About 2/3 of the ad were shot in-camera using extras and stuntmen.

There is a huge amount of hidden work throughout the commerical and it comes together in a larger than life spot for the Audi A5 Coupe
