A unique mix of 2D and 3D animation brought to you by Nucco Brain. Set in London, it follows a technology addicted hipster in a crazy rush through the urban jungle.
The Concept

Brian, your typical 21st century hipster, is struggling with a common mobile addiction. Absorbed by the modern day technology, he finds himself incapable of enjoying the beautiful world that surrounds him. Brian’s multiple encounters with reality are disrupted by his phone, luring him back to the virtual world. However, his journey to work takes an unexpected turn as his smartphone uncontrollably rebels.

The Production

It was quite challenging to find a way to mix 2D backgrounds and VFX with 3D characters and find the right stylization for lightning and texturing. Too much CGI nowadays looks the same in rendering, with unnecessary realism in some of the aspects and no effort made to stylise lights overall look.
We wanted to explore a different way of visualizing 3D animation, in harmony with an hand-drawn look and feel of the painted backgrounds and Effects.

All the backgrounds were manually painted and divided layers. All the characters are in 3D, but we used flat shades and hand painted textures to give the illusion of 2D dimensions, in this way, the characters would not clash with the 2D Backgrounds. In addition to that, all the effects (smoke, flashes and etc) were done in Classical Animation, a technique where each frame is drawn by hand.

A big challenge was to decide the story direction together, as a team, since we wanted a movie that would be exciting for all the crew to work on, when everybody would give their input. It was not as easy as we thought but the end result is much better than it would have been if the whole team hadn't contributed!

Final

At First Sight is a perfect mix between 3D techniques and 2D. We are extremely proud of the way it was developed and of the result. We are confident to say, we are the only ones doing this.
